Thin aluminum will bulge inward when joint compound is pressed over it. Also, if the aluminum is too thick, it sits too high off the wall.

Perforations and Mud Adhesion

Solid metal plates cannot bond properly to plaster. The aluminum backing must be perforated for proper adhesion.
